Scotland's McInally retires after injury ends World Cup hopes
  + stars: | 2023-09-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The former skipper was cut from Gregor Townsend's final squad for the tournament in August, but an injury to Dave Cherry at the team hotel saw the forward drafted in to join the squad in France. "It was a privilege to end my career being part of the 2023 Scotland Rugby World Cup squad and, for now, my rugby story is over. Former Scotland fullback Chris Paterson said McInally should be proud of what he has achieved. "It's horrible and it's all happened to one of the best guys you could ever meet - a brilliant bloke. Scotland are third in Pool B at the World Cup after losing to South Africa in their opener and beating Tonga on Sunday.

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend” has long been a well-known saying, but now, thanks to this interesting new paper in the American Political Science Review, it’s also political science. The authors investigate whether hostility to immigrants, particularly Muslims, has actually helped to generate support for L.G.B.T.+ rights among otherwise conservative nativist voters. They found that citizens “strategically liberalize” their stance on L.G.B.T.+ rights when they are told that people from an ethnic out-group — for example, Muslim immigrants in Europe — oppose such protections. (Here again, Trump is a useful exemplar: Although he embraced gay rights in the Pulse speech as a cudgel against Muslims, in practice his administration dismantled L.G.BT. protections, including rolling back rules against workplace discrimination and banning transgender people from the military.)

LONDON, Aug 23 (Reuters) - A teenage member of the Lapsus$ hacking group was on Wednesday found to have hacked Uber (UBER.N) and fintech firm Revolut then blackmailed the developers of best-selling videogame Grand Theft Auto after a trial at a London court. Arion Kurtaj, 18, embarked on a solo cyber crime spree in September 2022, first targeting Revolut before hacking Uber two days later. The teen then hacked Rockstar Games and threatened to release the planned Grand Theft Auto sequel's source code in a Slack message sent to all Rockstar staff. Kurtaj had previously hacked and blackmailed Britain's biggest broadband provider BT Group (BT.L) and mobile operator EE in 2021 and later chip maker Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) in February 2022. The jury on Wednesday found Kurtaj committed 12 offences, including three counts of blackmail, two counts of fraud and six charges under the Computer Misuse Act.

New BT boss’s biggest test is investor relations
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, July 31 (Reuters Breakingviews) - BT’s (BT.L) board faced the challenge of hiring a new CEO willing to implement a turnaround strategy decided by their predecessor. It has solved that problem by appointing one of its own members, Allison Kirkby, to the post vacated by outgoing Philip Jansen. Shares in the Swedish telco sank 4% on news of her departure, suggesting Telia’s loss is a gain for BT. Kirkby won’t take over until January 2024 but, having sat on BT’s board for more than four years, she should be able to hit the road running. Keeping these two investors on her side will be the real test for Kirkby at BT.

NEW YORK, July 31 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Hedge fund mastermind Steve Cohen is best known for his savvy trades, but it doesn’t take an investing whizz to make money in baseball. His New York Mets are one of the worst teams in the league despite a record-setting $364 million payroll. Cohen bought full ownership of the club in 2020 for $2.4 billion and spent lavishly on the roster. Even so, the Mets are already worth $500 million more than Cohen paid, according to Forbes, a nice uplift for substandard performance. Dan Snyder just sold his woeful Washington Commanders for $6 billion; Snyder paid $800 million for the team and its stadium in 1999.

Heineken’s pricing goof has a strategic spillover
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, July 31 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Dolf van den Brink has had a six-month-long happy hour. Heineken’s misstep occurred even though the company increased prices for its beers by an average of 13% from a year earlier. While consumer goods groups like Unilever (ULVR.L) managed to hike without losing much business, Heineken’s 6% hit to beer sales in the first half suggests van den Brink has not. In Vietnam, which analysts at Bernstein estimate accounts for nearly half of that region’s sales, Heineken admitted its pricing was mistimed. Van den Brink seems confident the worst is over for 2023, because all his price hikes have already happened.

Europe’s inflation data “meh” leaves ECB in limbo
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Monday’s first estimate of consumer price data for July reinforces the case for a pause on rising rates, but for Lagarde the picture is frustratingly unclear. Lagarde’s hardline colleagues will point out that’s too fast to bring inflation back to the ECB’s 2% target. Markets aren’t sure, ascribing a 70% chance to a pause in September, according to derivatives pricing data collected by Refinitiv. Revisions to the July numbers will follow and policymakers will get inflation data for August before they meet on September 14. Sequoia picks the right moment to ditch deadwood
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The $85 billion venture firm downsized the commitments it expects its investors to make to vehicles targeting cryptocurrency and its own peers, the Wall Street Journal reported. With those investors, known as limited partners, now less pressed to flee private markets, it’s a smart time for Sequoia to help them shift into more promising opportunities. As last year's downturn tanked their public investments, LPs found themselves relatively overinvested in still-highly-valued private markets, forcing them to pull back from the likes of venture funds. As public markets recover – the S&P 500 Index (.SPX) is up almost 20% this year – this “denominator effect” is fading, a Capstone Partners survey suggests. And with LPs once again keen on private markets, they may be more likely to stick around, despite Sequoia’s self-admitted mistakes on investments like now-bankrupt FTX.

Kirby has previously served as president and CEO of Swedish telecoms provider Telia, with experience at Virgin Media and Denmark's TDC. She has been a member of the BT Group board for the past four years. His legacy includes BT's push to build a national fibre network, offering discounted wholesale fibre pricing to major broadband providers in exchange for shifting customers to the grid. U.K. telecoms regulator Ofcom in May ruled that BT subsidiary Openreach's Equinox 2 wholesale pricing scheme was allowed. "Based on the evidence available to us, we don't consider Openreach's new pricing discounts to be anti-competitive," Ofcom said at the time.

BT reiterates 2024 outlook on cost control and broadband demand
  + stars: | 2023-07-27 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
BT Group, Britain's biggest broadband and mobile provider, reiterated its full-year outlook on Thursday as cost control and demand for broadband helped to offset inflationary pressures. The group said its adjusted core earnings rose 5% in the first quarter to 2 billion pounds ($2.6 billion), in line with analyst forecasts. Jansen said this month he would step down within the next year, a couple of years before the completion of his ambitious full-fibre roll-out. Its shares are down 30% in the last year as the cost of building out new fibre and 5G networks, and the hit to free cash flow, weighed on the business. BT said its Openreach network division was now 44% of the way through its full fibre build, with total fibre connections growing to 3.5 million.
